Magnesium
Magnesium Hydroxide when combined with water is better
known as Milk of Magnesia. It helps reduce stomach acid.
Magnesium, like calcium and phosphorus,
is considered a major mineral important to both nutrition and
medicine. Most people in the United States probably do not get
enough magnesium from their diet. Magnesium is an important
element in the body since it activates or is involved in many
basic processes or functions including:
Cofactor for over 300 enzymes
Oxidation of fatty acids
Activation of amino acids
Neurotransmission
Immune function
Certain studies have indicated that there is a link between
low magnesium levels and many heart conditions such as high
blood pressure and other heart disease
Interactions with other nutrients including potassium, vitamin
B6 and boron
Magnesium is important for every organ in the body, particularly
the heart, muscles and kidneys. It also contributes to the composition
of teeth and bones. Some medical conditions may deplete the
bodys store of magnesium including intestinal flu with
vomiting or diarrhea, certain stomach and bowel diseases (like
irritable bowel syndrome), diabetes, pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism,
kidney malfunction, and use of diuretics. Too much coffee, carbonated
drinks or alcohol as well as heavy menstrual periods or prolonged
stress may also lower magnesium levels.
Getting enough magnesium may help
conventional treatments for asthma and emphysema, attention
deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), diabetes, fibromyalgia,
heart disease, high blood pressure, inflammatory bowel disease
(IBD), menopause, migraine headaches, osteoporosis and premenstrual
syndrome (PMS).
Magnesium Citrate is perhaps
the most easily absorbed form of magnesium. As a mineral, magnesium
plays a very important role in over 300 metabolic reactions
in the body. It is used in basically every major biological
process including cellular energy and synthesis of nucleic acids
and proteins.
