Calcium

Calcium is needed for strong bones and teeth. It is the most abundant mineral in the body and is important for helping the heart, nerves, muscles and other body systems work properly.

According to the National Institutes of Health, it is not unusual for many individuals to consume less than half the calcium they need for building and maintaining healthy bones. Heavy use of caffeine such as in coffee, large intake of sodium phosphates found in carbonated drinks and alcohol can decrease the calcium the body retains.

Research has shown calcium may impact conditions such as osteoporosis, hypoarathyroidism, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, colon issues, obesity, tooth and gum disease and insomnia.

To function properly, calcium must be accompanied by several other nutrients including Vitamin D, phosphorus and magnesium.

Not all forms of calcium are equally as effective. Calcium is a difficult supplement for many people. Tablets may be weak, may be in poor forms (such as carbonate) or may not provide the necessary supporting minerals.

Calcium citrate is easier to digest and less likely to cause constipation and gas.

Calcium Carbonate is a naturally occurring mineral often used in antacids. It helps relieve indigestion, heartburn, and stomach upset.

Chromium
Chromium is an essential mineral. While it may be found in a variety of foods, as many as 90% of American diets are low in chromium. Low chromium levels may result in an increase in blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol.

Chromium supports effective functioning of insulin. Insulin is needed for transporting glucose to cells for energy production. Diabetes results when the body cannot create enough insulin or has trouble using it effectively. Chromium has been shown in numerous studies to be beneficial in treating insulin resistance and diabetes.

Other studies show chromium to be effective in improving insulin sensitivity and lowering blood glucose levels. Up to 80 million Americans may suffer from insulin resistance where the body fails to respond properly to the insulin it produces.

Chromium has also shown significant benefit in treating polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). This condition affects up to 2 million women and can result in infertility. It is associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Chromium picolinate is one of the most popular forms of chromium available and is used in hundreds of different supplements. It is a combination of the element chromium and picolinic acid. The addition of picolinic acid aids in the ability of chromium to be absorbed.
