Valerian
Root - commonly called garden heliotrope
Calms and soothes the nervous system. Reduces tension and
emotional stress, aids in a restful sleep, and eases menstrual
cramps.
Valerian, also commonly called garden heliotrope, is found throughout
Europe, Asia and North America. For centuries it has been prized
for its soothing qualities. Valerian gained in popularity in the
17th century and was commonly used for insomnia and to help relieve
stress-related anxiety and nervous restlessness.
Research has confirmed that these applications
are more than just superstition. In 2003, scientists discovered
that the sedative and sleep enhancing properties of valerian were
related to two flavonoids: 6-methylapigenin and Hesperidin. Valerian
acts as a natural tranquilizer and may help soothe anxiety, nervous
tension, insomnia and headaches.
Studies have shown that valerian can reduce
the amount of time it takes to fall asleep and it helps improve
the quality of sleep. An added benefit is that valerian does not
have the side effects such as drowsiness the next day.
