What Herbs Are And What They Do

St. John's
Wort - Hypericum perforatum, Klamath weed
In ancient Greece, St. Johns wort
was used to treat many ailments, including sciatica and poisonous
reptile bites. In Europe, St. Johns wort was used by herbalists
for the topical treatment of wounds and burns. It is also a folk
remedy for kidney and lung ailments as well as for depression.
Test tube studies suggest that St.
Johns wort extracts may exert their antidepressant actions
by inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin,
norepinephrine, and dopamine. This action is possibly due to the
constituent hyperforin. St. Johns wort is able to act as
an antidepressant, by making more of these neurotransmitters available
to the brain.

Saw
Palmetto Berry - Fructus Serenoae
Native Americans
and early American settlers used Saw Palmetto to treat problems
associated with the genitals, urinary tract and reproductive system.
This herb is called the "plant catheter" due to its
therapeutic effect on the neck of the bladder and the prostate
in men.
Saw Palmetto is widely used in Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom
and the U.S. for nutritionally benefiting the prostate and urinary
tract. Saw Palmetto is a tonic, and is one of the few herbal remedies
that are considered to be anabolic -- strengthening and building
body tissues. The Saw Palmetto berries have long held a reputation
as sexual stimulants and aphrodisiacs. Their largest use today
is as a supplement for reducing enlarged prostate glands, treating
urinary tract problems and for improving body strength.
Saw Palmetto has shown significant
action in treatment of conditions associated with benign prostatic
hypertrophy (BPH). Saw Palmetto extract works to prevent testosterone
from converting into dihydrotestosterone, the hormone thought
to cause prostrate cells to multiply which leads to an enlarged
prostate.
Saw Palmetto inhibits androgen
and estrogen receptor activity and may be beneficial for both
sexes in balancing the hormones. Because of its hormonal effects,
Saw Palmetto can aid the thyroid in regulating sexual development
and normalizing activity of those glands and organs.
Saw palmetto berries
have traditionally been used to treat frequent urination during
the night, as well as impotence, decreased libido, and prostate
problems. Today, saw palmetto berries are widely used to treat BPH
(benign prostatic hyperplasia), a condition in which the prostate
gland becomes enlarged, causing symptoms like pain and frequent
urination.
The active ingredients in
saw palmetto berries are phytosterols from a variety of fatty acids.
Phytosterols prevent conversion of testosterone to DHT, which is
thought to be responsible for causing the prostate to become inflamed.
These substances also prevent DHT from binding to prostate cells,
further reducing the risk of prostate enlargement.
Saw palmetto berries
also have anti-estrogenic and anti-androgenic properties that keep
inflammation in check. The herb has been widely studied as a remedy
for BPH in both the United States and Europe with consistently favourable
results.
European studies since the 1960s have shown that men taking
saw palmetto experience significant improvement in urinary tract
symptoms (+28%), peak urine flow (+24%) and overall urine flow (+48%).*

Smilax
- Sarsaparilla
The root of this bramble-like,
woody vine can grow over 100 feet in height, often high into the
rainforest canopy. Smilax root has been used by the indigenous peoples
of Central and South America for centuries as a treatment for sexual
impotence, for various skin ailments, and as a tonic to combat general
physical weakness.
Mexican varieties of the root
were introduced into European medicine in the early 1500's, and
soon developed into a popular cure for syphilis and rheumatism,
likely due to it's strong blood-cleansing and liver strengthening
properties. Smilax has continued as a treatment for syphilis and
various other sexually-transmitted diseases elsewhere in the world.
It entered the US Pharmacopoeia as a syphilis treatment in 1820.
Clinical research in China have shown that Smilax may be effective
in 90% of acute cases of syphilis, and up to 50% in chronic cases.
There is little doubt this herb is helpful to sexual health.*
